Bombay Experience unites the mathematical precision of Carnatic music with the raw energy of Indian hip-hop in a bold new project. At its center are two groundbreaking artists: BC Manjunath, the Bangalore-based mridangam and konnakol virtuoso known for bridging classical and contemporary music, and Manmeet Kaur, one of India’s pioneering female rappers whose bilingual verses tackle environmental and social issues.
French composer Alexandre Herer conceived the project after encountering Mumbai’s vibrant rap and beatbox culture in Dharavi and later discovering striking parallels between Manjunath’s rhythmic systems and his own compositional methods during a masterclass.
Herer’s repertoire lets Manjunath’s intricate rhythms flow effortlessly with Kaur’s Hindi-English lyricism, supported by Gaël Petrina on bass and Pierre Mangeard on drums. The result is more than fusion—it is a genuine conversation between Carnatic tradition, hip-hop, and jazz, producing a sound that is rooted, contemporary, and innovative.
