Monika Herzig’s Sheroes All In Good Time This fourth project under the Sheroes banner, an all-female band spearheaded by pianist, prolific composer, and arranger Monika Herzig, is simultaneously a celebration of the group’s 10th anniversary and a salute to their perseverance. Back in 2014, Herzig’s idea was to bring together fellow women jazz musicians with the goal of presenting powerful role models on stage as a way of breaking lingering stereotypes — a path initially paved by Sherri Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra in the ‘90s.
That groups like Artemis and similar initiatives have since followed the trail Sheroes helped blaze is proof that their efforts have paid off. The various Sheroes ensembles over time represent an extended family of bandleaders in their own right. All In Good Time is their latest step in an ongoing mission to elevate some of these iconic composers and players. “It was great having fellow bandleaders because they understand the challenges of leading projects and can provide moral support and sometimes share resources,” said Herzig of her fellow Sheroes bandmates. “We also have an understanding that we face similar challenges, and it helps to have a community where you can talk and work towards similar goals.”
